Freelancing is a challenge. I've stated the obvious! For many hard working individuals freelancing is the ONLY option. Between family and home and life, working as a freelancer 'fits', however, the economic climate is almost hostile towards freelancers. It's difficult to get a paycheck when the 'service' you're providing is viewed as an 'option' rather than a 'necessity'. Really though, art is very much a necessity. Everything around us that was created by man has, at some point, passed through the hands of an artist of some kind.
Personally I freelance so I can be home for my children. Letting them understand that they are more important than working, or 'stuff' is a big deal to me. I'm very fortunate to be able to do that. There are a lot of parents out there that do not have the that choice.
Still...freelancing is an up and down roller coaster. Hit or miss. I've been lucky to work with some of the most wonderful clients anyone could ask for. Very few times has anyone been dishonest, although there have been a couple, unfortunately.
So, what does it take to get steady work, to be paid deserving of the hours/time put into a project, to work with clients that are fair and good and honest?
Even with hard work, super fast delivery, a unique and high quality skill set, great communication abilities...you can still be left 'looking'.
Let me know if you find the answer and I'll do the same!
